GB Junior Rowing Team
How can I become a GB Junior International?
- Will you be under 18 years of age on Dec 31st 2011?
- Do you hold, or are you eligible to hold, a British Passport ?
- Can you complete a 2k piece on a concept II ergometer in under 6 mins 55 secs (boys), or 7 min 50 secs (girls) ?
- Would you like the chance to race for Great Britain at the World Rowing Junior Championships or Coupe de la Jeunesse in 2012?
If the answer is YES then get into your sculling boat and get ready to take the first step on the road to international selection. You will need to race in your single at the Early Identification Trial held on 19th November in Boston
That is the first step on the road.
The World Rowing Junior Championships and Coupe de la Jeunesse take place in late July/early August each year and crews are selected during Final Junior trials in early July each year, but the process begins much earlier: way back in September/October of the previous year.
The steps are as follows:
Late September / Mid-October
Coaches of Junior contenders register them for the scheme by completing the registration form available through all club circulations or via the British Rowing website.
Late October
The first ergo test result – (2000m at max rate 24; boys <6:55.0, girls <7:50.0) is submitted along with an entry for the Early Identification Trial.
November
The Early Identification Trial takes place in Boston, Lincolnshire. This is a 5000m time trial in single sculling boats for all contenders whether you are seeking selection in sweep or sculling.
December / January
Two further ergo test results are submitted: 5000m at rate 26 (Dec) and 2000m at rate 26 (Jan).
February
Contenders race in the Long Distance Trials at Boston over two days in pairs or in singles/doubles. Each day is a 5000m time trial.
Late March/Early April
Spring Assessments held at the National Water Sports Centre, Nottingham. This trial is by invitation and is based on previous trial performance.
Late April
The Junior Small Boats Regatta, takes place at Dorney Lake. A series of 2000m races in pairs or single sculls. Entry to this event is restricted to those who have completed the other parts of the selection procedure and will be subject to an ergometer cut-off time; in 2011 this was: boys <6:35.0, girls <7:30.0.
Late June/Early July
The outstanding rowers from the trials process will be invited to Final Trials. Selections are made here for the World Rowing Junior Championships and Coupe de la Jeunesse.
Other training/crew development
After each set of trials, invitations are made to leading candidates to race/train in some development crews. Generally, there is a training camp in Nantes, France in December, a regatta in Munich in May and possibly a race or two at Metropolitan Regatta in June.
All the information and further more specific details can be obtained from the British Rowing Website, or from Divisional Reps or Junior Co-ordinators at your club / school. The High Performance Coach (Juniors) Richard Boulton is always happy to provide advice and answer any questions.
J16 athletes
For aspiring, younger, athletes there is an annual GB-France team match held in early July each year. Selection for this event is club,or school, based and a selection regatta takes place a week or so before the event. A full list of the events and further information can be obtained via the British Rowing website or through club circulations.
